I wanted to clear up some things with this. First, the background selection in xfce.  This is how xfce works.  There is a workaround. 
Run thunar
go to the parent folder of the one you want to use
click once over the one you want
drag the folder to the left to include it in your preferred folders
run the settings app and select desktop
chose the folder on the side and hit open
now you can select the images. 

Alternatively, you can place the images in a sub folder of /usr/local/share/backgrounds and then select it from the side.  I agree this is super clunky. 

As for the .xinitrc issue, I just created a default .xinitrc file with sessions support in the master branch in midnightbsd. This will get installed with new users in the next release.  
I’ve also modified the mlogind project to use the /usr/local/share/xsessions folder now which will allow you to cycle through different sessions by hitting f1 key.
