MNBSD-2026-69: Multiple vulnerabilities in OpenSSL (CVE-2026-63072, CVE-2026-63074, CVE-2026-63076, CVE-2026-54874, CVE-2026-75803)

Severity: Unknown

Affected Package: openssl

Summary: Multiple vulnerabilities in OpenSSL (CVE-2026-63072, CVE-2026-63074, CVE-2026-63076, CVE-2026-54874, CVE-2026-75803)

Description

The OpenSSL Project published a security advisory on 25 August 2026. Different issues affect different OpenSSL versions, and MidnightBSD ships two of them: current (master) and stable/4.1 carried OpenSSL 3.0.21, while stable/4.0 carries OpenSSL 1.1.1w. Affecting the 3.0 series (current and stable/4.1): 1. Heap buffer overflow in AES-WRAP-PAD unwrap (CWE-787, CVE-2026-63072) - cms_kek_cipher() sized its output buffer from the length reported by the cipher, but on its integrity-failure paths the primitive writes and cleanses up to the input length, giving an 8 byte out-of-bounds heap write reachable through CMS key unwrapping. Rated moderate by OpenSSL. 2. NULL dereference via a crafted CMP protectionAlg (CWE-476, CVE-2026-63076) - an invalid pointer dereference in password-based protection verification, affecting CMP servers and clients. Rated moderate by OpenSSL. 3. Unbounded certificate cache growth in the CMP server (CWE-770, CVE-2026-63074) - the cache of extraCerts may grow without bound when context objects are reused. 4. Excessive memory use buffering DTLS next-epoch records (CWE-770, CVE-2026-54874) - a peer can use a small amount of network traffic to make a DTLS endpoint retain a disproportionately large amount of memory, roughly 1200x amplification. 5. AEAD tag verification skipped for empty ciphertexts (CWE-347, CVE-2026-75803) - ChaCha20-Poly1305 and AES-OCB decryption may skip authentication tag verification for empty ciphertexts when using EVP_Cipher(). Affecting the 1.1.1 series (stable/4.0): CVE-2026-63072 and CVE-2026-54874 only. Security impact ranges from denial of service to, in the case of the heap overflow, potential memory corruption. The AEAD issue allows forged messages to be accepted as authentic in a narrow case. The remaining CVEs in the corresponding FreeBSD advisory do not affect MidnightBSD at all: CVE-2026-14457 (raw public keys), CVE-2026-18798 (QUIC server double free), CVE-2026-63073 (CMP format string injection) and CVE-2026-63075 (QUIC ACK-only memory growth) are all OpenSSL 3.4 and later. CVE-2026-75803 affects the 3.0 series but is not listed in the FreeBSD advisory; it is fixed here by the 3.0.22 update. OpenSSL 1.1.1 is end of life upstream and these fixes are published only in a premium support release (1.1.1zi), so stable/4.0 receives local backports rather than a version update. CVE-2026-63072 is fully fixed there. For CVE-2026-54874, stable/4.0 takes the upstream limit change - the next-epoch record queue is capped at 16 entries instead of 100 - without the accompanying record buffer rework. This bounds the worst-case memory amplification rather than eliminating it; the 3.0 branches get the complete fix. The CMP issues do not apply to 1.1.1, which has no CMP implementation, and CVE-2026-75803 is 3.0 and later.
